TOKYO -- An Osaka-based food company announced on Jan. 10 that its Bon Curry brand has been certified by Guinness World Records as the longest-selling retort pouch curry brand in the world.
Bon Curry was introduced by Otsuka Foods Co. in February 1968 with the concept of being a curry that "nobody can fail" to make, as it can be enjoyed simply by heating the pouch in hot water. It was the first food product in retort pouch packaging to be sold commercially. With technological developments that allowed products to be kept at room temperature for extended periods, the curry gained a following for its convenience as a ready-made meal that could be heated in just three minutes. In 2003, the product became microwaveable without the need to remove its cardboard packaging. The brand sticks to certain standards, such as using only Japan-grown vegetables and potatoes whose buds were removed by hand as ingredients.
The company will begin to release limited edition packages of their curry marked with the Guinness Records seal starting in the middle of January.
Otsuka Foods commented, "We will continue to evolve based on changes of the times and in consumer values, coming up with products that contribute to people's lives."
