The Jefferson County Joint Vocational School is ready to put its student-built modular home up for bid and open houses are slated for this week.

The 1,400 square-foot, ranch-style structure was constructed by seniors in the school’s carpentry program since the fall of 2018 and features three bedrooms, including a master bedroom with bath and a walk-in closet, plus one full bath, a kitchen, dining room, great room and laundry room. “Our juniors and seniors have been building homes for years,” Superintendent Dr. Todd Phillipson said. “We’re preparing them for the workforce, and they just do a fantastic job building these homes.”

It’s built from the ground up.

“When our students start this, they start with a bare parking lot,” Carpentry teacher Steve Orwick, said. “Then they start with the floor framing, the wall framing, then the roof framing. Then they go to the exterior – finish shingles. Then they come back and install the drywall, finish the drywall, and install all of the finishes, including the doors, the cabinets, etc., until it’s done.”

The first of two open houses was held earlier this week, with the other slated for Sunday from 1-4 p.m., at the school, located at 1509 County Road 22A in Bloomingdale.

Appointments may also be made to view the site, and sealed bids will be accepted on or before May 28 at noon and submitted to JVS Treasurer Karen Spoonemore.

Meanwhile, plans will be made to start on the next building.

“We’ll try to get a contract for the next one in June or July,” Phillipson said.

Students in the JVS electrical trades program and some professional contractors were also involved, with the latter performing plumbing and HVAC work, while the school’s Transition to Work students also cleaned the home in preparation for the showcase and sale. This is the second modular home created at the site in addition to seven houses in the neighboring Breezewood Manor Subdivision.

Once the current structure is purchased, it will be split into two sections for transport to the new owner’s property and later reattached.
