Types of smartphone displays and how they’re different | Times of India

These are the two main types of display that are used in smartphones. Each type has further variations and generations.

Liquid Crystal Display or LCD panels includes a chain of liquid crystals illuminated by a backlight. These panels are relatively less expensive and are used by several smartphone makers. Lcd 10 Inch

Modern LCDs are based on a TFT (Thin Film Transistor) layer which is more cost-effective than the older ones. These displays perform better in direct sunlight but are less colour accurate.

LED screens also include liquid crystals, but the main difference is that LEDs generate backlight. LED displays also consume less power but not on smaller screens.

TFT and TN (Twisted Nematic) LCDs tend to distort colours when seen from the side. In-Plane Switching or IPS technology solves this problem. They also offer better viewing angles (up to 178 degrees) and colour reproduction.

IPS displays were invented by Hitachi and now they are manufactured by LG. Samsung also created a similar technology which the company calls Plane to Line Switching or PLS displays.

Mini LEDs are also LCD panels with more LEDs on the backlight. These displays offer better contrast levels and higher peak brightness. The first mobile device with a miniLED display was the Apple iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2021).

Organic Light Emitting Diode or OLED displays offer purer blacks and consume less energy with darker themes. However, these screens are more expensive and use more power for displaying lighter-coloured themes.

OLED displays support higher refresh rates but aren’t properly visible under direct sunlight. Screen burn-in and diode degradation are also some of its drawbacks. But, OLEDs can be made thinner and more flexible than LCDs.

To control individual pixels, AMOLED (Active Matrix OLED) technology uses a TFT layer like in LCDs. Basically, all OLED screens are variations of the AMOLED technology.

4 Inch Lcd Display 480*800 MicroLEDs don’t need a backlight (like LCDs) and offer similar contrast levels as OLEDs, without the risks of screen burn-in. MicroLEDs also support higher brightness levels with lower power consumption.
