Lunar New Year Events New York City 2024 – New York Family

Lunar New Year starts Feb. 10 and ends on Feb. 10 this year. Celebrate the Year of the Dragon and learn about Lunar New Year with these events all over New York! Click on your preferred region to jump down to that section:

The Shops & Restaurants at Hudson Yards will celebrate Lunar New Year, presented by Martell Cognac with traditional decor featuring lanterns, wreaths, and more across Level 1.

On Saturdays there will be a series of free performances, including traditional lion dances and ribbon twirling presented in partnership with the New York Chinese Cultural Center.

Celebrate the New Year Japanese-style with a live Japanese taiko drum performance, and a variety of fun traditional activities such as New Year’s calligraphy, lion dancing, and New Year’s-themed crafts. 

Welcome the Year of the Dragon with performances and craft activities inspired by Lunar New Year traditions across Asia.

Activities include Lion Dance, interactive Kung Fu demonstration, musical performance and singalong, Korean New Year’s songs, and arts and crafts including face painting, shadow puppet making, clay rabbit charms, origami and lotus 

Celebrate the 2024 Lunar New Year—the Year of the Dragon—with China Institute in America!

For this year’s festival, they are flying in master artists directly from the picturesque historical province of Zhejiang, China to New York City to provide an authentic, captivating, true immersive cultural experience for your entire family that’s filled with festive activities and performances.

Celebrate The Year of the Dragon with an original story created by Ya Ya Preschool’s education team.

During this story event, children will go on an imaginary adventure with Little Dragon and Big Ya Ya to find out about Little Dragon’s superpower. Story, songs, and movement activities will be bilingual in Mandarin and English. 

This Lunar New Year, use design and creativity to explore elements of strength, intelligence, and prosperity!

Celebrate the year of the Wood Dragon: abundance, prosperity, and rejuvenation for all with a family-friendly party featuring a beloved lion dance performance, delicious goodies, fun demonstrations, crafts, karaoke, dancing, storytime with author Michele Wong McSween, and more.

Start off the Year of the Dragon with a bang with a spectacular firecracker display along with musical performances, dance, and more!

Celebrate Losar, the Tibetan New Year, with an afternoon of art. Learn about traditional Losar celebrations and this year’s zodiac animal, the powerful and determined Wood Dragon. Then explore the galleries, watch a traditional torma butter sculpture demonstration, and let your creativity go wild!

See 20+ lion dance groups parade throughout the streets of Chinatown. Each groups’ lions will go store to store blessing and eating offerings. This day is the best day to get up close and watch lion dancing.

Celebrate Lunar New Year with live lion dance performances, calligraphy and crafts. In partnership with the New York Chinese Cultural Center and the South Street Seaport Museum. Activities will take place throughout the day to welcome the Year of the Wood Dragon.

This annual parade features traditional lion dances, floats, marching bands, local first responders, and more! 

Krafty Kids are invited to create a themed craft in celebration of Lunar New Year!

Celebrate the start of the Year of the Dragon by learning about its role in the Chinese zodiac. Then, assemble and decorate a fan inspired by “dragons” in nature: lizards, snakes and other creatures that call the Bronx home.

Listen to a story and make a craft to celebrate the Year of the Dragon!

Join Miss Steffey in welcoming the Lunar New Year! Participants will create and decorate their own paper lantern. 

Bring the family to this free drop-in program celebrating Lunar New Year. Create art inspired by the collection and enjoy a lion dance performance by the Chinese Freemasons Athletic Club.

Celebrate the Year of the Dragon with the 2024 Lunar New Year Parade in Flushing, Queens, the most dynamic and diverse community in America!

Marvel at the colorful floats, dragon dances, and mesmerizing performances by talented artists. Indulge in delicious food and explore the bustling markets filled with festive goodies.

Immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and smells of a traditional Lunar New Year festival to welcome the influential Year of the Dragon, featuring headliners such as two-time Guinness World Record holder Lina Liu’s foot juggling umbrellas, Sichuan Opera Face Changing, and  “Happy Chef” Chinese acrobat Yang Xiao Di.

Celebrate the Year of the Dragon with folk dances, Lion and Dragon Dance, Peking Opera, and traditional arts and crafts.

The event will include an hour-long performance program featuring professional artists and students of NYCCC’s School of the Arts.

In addition to a hands-on Chinese calligraphy and ink brush painting workshop for kids and adults, there will be an all-ages art-making workshop on dragon craft creations.

Enjoy an evening of community and cultural exchange to celebrate the Year of the Dragon. Music Director Xian Zhang ignited the first Lunar New Year Celebration six years ago, and this festive tradition continues with conductor Yue Bao and pianist Tony Siqi Yun.
