Georgia Southern Basketball jersey retirement set for February - Grice Connect

Georgia Southern men's and women's basketball will retire a combined seven jerseys during a February doubleheader at Hanner Fieldhouse, as announced Monday by director of athletics Jared Benko. Four men's basketball standouts and three women's basketball Hall of Famers will be a part of the festivities during the final full season of Eagle basketball in Hanner.

The former student-athletes being honored include the No. 4 of Tookie Brown (2015-19), No. 12 of Charlton "CY" Young (1989-93), No. 14 of Johnny Mills (1971-75) and the No. 35 of Fran Florian (1961-64) from men's basketball, and then the No. 15 of Phylette Blake (1985-89), the No. 42 of Regina Days-Bryan (1984-88) and the No. 50 of Trina Roberts (1980-84). The only player in Sun Belt history with more than 2,000 points and 500 assists, Tookie Brown finished his career ranked fourth on the Sun Belt career scoring list, ninth in assists and 19th in steals ... Finished his career at Georgia Southern as the all-time leader during the Division I era in scoring with 2,290 points, in games played with 129, in games started with 125 and in free throws made with 608 ... Also ranked in the Top 10 in his career in field goals (4th - 741), assists (3rd - 526), steals (3rd, 197), free throw percentage (6th - .773), 3-point percentage (6th - .375) and 3-pointers made (9th - 200) ... 2019-19 Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American ... 2018-19 Sun Belt Player of the Year ... 4x First Team All-Sun Belt Conference honoree ... 6x Sun Belt Player of the Week honors ... 3x NABC All-District Honoree ... A three-time All-Conference selection at point guard in two different leagues (Trans America Athletic: 1990-91, 1991-92; Southern: 1992-93)... also earned All-Tournament Team honors in both circuits and was named MVP in 1992 (TAAC)... guided Georgia Southern to the NCAA Tournament in 1992 (vs. Oklahoma State) after winning TAAC regular season and tournament in resounding fashion (25-6 record)... stands seventh all-time in scoring with 1,517 points... currently holds the career mark in 3-point FG percentage (40.9%)... also ranks second in free throw percentage (78.1%) and assists (530), and third in career 3-point FG made (241)... ranks high in other career categories - field goals made (8th, 533), field goals attempted (8th, 1,166), 3-point field goals attempted (4th, 589) and steals (4th, 162)... began his coaching career after his 1994 graduation, working on the Auburn, Northeastern, Jacksonville, Chattanooga and Georgia Tech staffs... helped lead the Mocs to the 2005 Southern Conference tournament title and NCAA tournament as associate head coach... Was a four-year starter at forward (1985-89)... Is the all-team leader in scoring with 2,140 points, an average of 19.8 points per game... Led the team in scoring twice – as a sophomore in 1986-87 and as senior in 1988-89... Still holds 15 school records (eight for a career, five for a season and two for a game)... Tallied 780 points (26.0 per contest) during final campaign, the most-ever a Lady Eagle... Also holds season standards for field goals (314 in 1988-89)... Set Georgia Southern's career record for points, scoring average, field goals (929), field goal attempts (1,555), free throw attempts (826), rebounds (1,242), steals (150) and blocked shots (138)... Held nine school records following senior year... Born November 19, 1966 in Tarrytown, Georgia... Still holds the standards for field goal percentage in career, 65.1%, and in a season 75% --- a mark that ranks second in NCAA Division I history... Led the Lady Eagles in scoring three times (1984-85, 1985-86, 1987-88)... 1986 and 1988 New South Women's Athletic Conference 'Player of the Year'. An all-conference selection three times (as sophomore, junior and senior)... Posted three of the top 10 scoring performances in school history... Career high 39 points against Georgia State still ranks second... Topped 30-point mark 11 times during career... Played volleyball for one season (1989) following basketball career.

Lettered four seasons for Lady Eagles basketball program. Born June 13, 1962 in Charleston, South Carolina. Made immediate impact arriving as a freshman and starting all 117 career games. Top scorer at Georgia Southern during sophomore, junior and senior seasons. One of eight Georgia Southern women's basketball 1,000-point scorers with 1,672 career points (14.3 average). Also is the Lady Eagles' second all-time leading rebounder with 1,229 rebounds (10.5 average). Made 659-of-1,099 field goals for a 63.2 percentage and made 282-of-401 free throws for a 70.3 percentage. Recorded 45 assists. Paced Lady Eagles to a 79-42 record from 1980-1984. Helped Georgia Southern to two Association fo Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) South Regional appearance in 1980-81 and 1981-82. 1981-82 squad advanced to the AIAW Nationals in New Brunswick, New Jersey after winning South Regionals and compiling Georgia Southern's top record in history at 25-6. Averaged 14.4 points sophomore season, 15.5 points per junior season and 20.3 points senior season to top all Lady Eagle players. Turned in three of the top individual rebounding seasons ever at Georgia Southern with a 11.5 average in 1981-82, a 12.0 average in 1982-83 and 13.4 mark during 1983-84. Played overseas in the Australian women's professional league.
