Katherine Bell, who works at the museum in Somerset, said the scarf: " is about 23ft (seven metres) at the moment but it is ever growing."

Doctor Who through the ages

The new Doctor Who has been announced!

Each Doctor from the Dr Who series over the past 60 years has had their own unique outfit and sense of style.

Tom Baker - who played the fourth Doctor between 1974-1981 - wore a really long stripy scarf as part of his outfit.

Legend has it the costume designer for the show gave a knitter a big bag of wool in different colours and asked her to knit a scarf.

The designer thought they would pick one colour of wool they liked from the bag, but instead they used up all the wool and created a very long multi-coloured scarf.

Tom Baker liked the scarf so much he decided to keep it, and it became an iconic part of the Doctor's costume.

Volunteers have been knitting away adding to their scarf in Weston-super-Mare, but they have a plan for what to do with it when they are finished.

"Once we've had some fun wrapping up various things in our awesome scarf we plan to chop it down into standard lengths and these will then go towards our Warm Bundles Project." said Katherine Bell.

"We've been working with other community organisations to gather bundles that are given to homeless people. This means that our long scarf will go to a good cause," she said.
