Not all workout leggings are created equal — and compression leggings are a prime example. This type of legging is designed to hug the body like a second skin to create slight constriction without affecting your movement. “Compression provides heat and stimulation to the muscle which increases blood flow and oxygenation to improve metabolism,” explains Dr. Stephen Liu, chairman, co-founder, and CEO of Forme.

We reached out to medical experts and real-world fitness trainers to learn how compression clothing impacts your workouts (and recovery) and what features are most important. Some of these items we tested ourselves, while others we decided on after serious research. Whether you’re addicted to pockets or you swear by adjustable waistbands, these compression leggings will fit the bill.

Why We Like It: There’s no chance of a camel toe.

It’s Worth Noting: You may need to size up from your usual size.

When a pair of leggings is approved by Jennifer Garner, you know they’ve got to be some of the best compression leggings around. The Spanx Booty Burst Active Cropped Leggings are beloved for their high-rise, contoured waistband — which lifts your butt and makes it look even better. The performance fabric is designed to wick sweat and remain breathable during your sweatiest workouts, and the thick waistband holds everything in place.

One note: These leggings feel a little tight around the waist before you’ve broken them in, and you may feel more comfortable ordering up a size. Yes, the compression works that well. If you prefer more length, try the 7/8 version.

Why We Like It: These innovative leggings are designed to improve posture and alignment.

It’s Worth Noting: Sizing is limited.

If you like your compression leggings with a side of science, you’ll love the Forme Sculpt+ Leggings. The 3D waistband alignment technology (which is patent-pending, BTW) has several layers of pliant fabrics that engage your core, glutes, and spine to improve your posture, stability, and mobility. The result? Reduced lower back and hip pain, less stiffness, and faster recovery. The compression is mostly in the waistband area, and the fit in the legs is snug but comfortable. Another interesting note? Forme’s leggings are FDA-registered in the spine brace category, so you can purchase them with your FSA or HSA (although a prescription may be required).

At the time of publishing, Forme’s size range is still relatively limited, as are their colorways. They’re also a little pricier than other compression leggings on the market.

Why We Like It: They're designed with a supportive, adjustable waistband.

It’s Worth Noting: Reviews suggest sizing runs on the smaller side.

If you’re addicted to high waistbands, Nike Go Women’s Firm-Support High-Waist Leggings are the anti-rolling, pinching, and sliding leggings of your dreams. An extra-wide waistband (with adjustable drawcord) ensures everything is held snugly in place, which works magic alongside the InfinaLock compressive fabric. Six pockets — two at the side, three drop-ins, and one zip pocket at the thigh — afford you plenty of storage options. Plus, there’s no worry about your phone being left drenched in sweat as Nike’s Dri-FIT technology wicks moisture away for quick evaporation. The 7⁄8 length will see you through both the warmer and chillier seasons.

Why We Like It: These compression leggings offer engineered zones of support where runners need it the most.

It’s Worth Noting: Sizes and colors are limited.

Serious runners know the impact a good pair of compression leggings can have on your run — they can mean the difference between a PR and stopping every five steps to yank up your waistband. Lululemon’s SenseKnit High Rise Running Tights (which we reviewed in full here) were designed with runners in mind, crafted with targeted compression and breathable ventilation so you don’t overheat. They also run true to size, which takes the guesswork out of shopping for compression leggings. Like the brand's top-rated workout shorts, they felt like a second skin on our legs, and we especially appreciated that they still held their shape after multiple uses and washes.

However, they’re not necessarily for shoppers looking for a steal — Lululemon is a women's workout wear retailer that makes splurge-worthy clothes. These premium leggings are priced to match their high-performance promises, and the size range is limited compared to the rest of their leggings.

Why We Like It: Even after multiple washes, the fabric “snaps back” and doesn’t sag.

It’s Worth Noting: There’s only one side pocket, and it’s quite small.

To get the elusive perfect-fitting compression leggings, an adjustable drawstring is key — but the fabric also has to be the right blend of supportive and flexible. The Sweaty Betty Power Workout Leggings are buttery soft and lighter in weight than other compression leggings for a barely-there feel. Plus, the elastane and polyamide blend is durable enough to stand up to multiple washes and wears, and it reliably snaps back to retain the leggings' glove-like fit.

If you’re pockets-obsessed, take note: These leggings have one side pocket on the left-hand side that’s a little too small for most phones. There is a credit card-sized back zip pocket in the waistband.

Why We Like It: The fast-drying fabric doesn’t bog you down during sweaty workouts.

It’s Worth Noting: They run a little small.

Lululemon’s Wunder Train leggings are ultra-popular among the gym crowd, thanks to their fast-drying fabric. The four-way stretch moves with you during every single squat and lunge, and there’s added Lycra to help the leggings spring back into shape after multiple watches and wears. But these particular leggings are an upgrade over the traditional Wunder Train tights for one major reason: pockets. Each pair of leggings has two side drop-in pockets that comfortably secure your phone in place, plus a hidden pocket in the waistband for your must-haves (think: credit card or house key).

If you’re between sizes or usually find Lululemon leggings to run small, definitely size up. These leggings are a little tight, but the upside is that they stay locked in place through every movement.

Why We Like It: A subtle sheen adds some flair to your style.

It’s Worth Noting: Sizing may be tricky — consult the size chart and your measurements.

Sculpting magic is how many of Alo's fan base would describe the 7 ⁄ 8 High-Waist Airlift Leggings. Made from the brand’s Airlift fabric, the subtle sheen and smooth silhouette have gained them the popular vote in the category of the best sculpting leggings. Featuring four-way stretch for breezy movement and high compression, these leggings are topped with a double-layered waistband for a supportive hug around your core. They’re also a fashion statement, whether at your yin yoga class or running errands.

Why We Like It: The material is moisture-wicking and anti-odor.

It’s Worth Noting: They’re designed with a narrow waistband.

If high-compression leggings are your go-to, the Ultra Compression Women’s Recovery Leggings by Zensah won’t disappoint. As a brand that emphasizes compression and seamless construction, you know what you're getting in the snug department. They feature 'muscle-mapped ribbing' and graduated compression, stimulating the muscles to recover faster after a workout. They’re seamless for total freedom of movement without pesky chafing. Plus, no matter how sweaty the workout, the breathable material (a blend of polyamide and elastane) wicks moisture and odor away before it seeps in. As a side note, the brand’s apparel is manufactured with near zero waste.

Why We Like It: They're super size-inclusive, plus they're available in petite, regular, and tall lengths.

It’s Worth Noting: The compression is lighter compared to others we tried.

Old Navy’s High-Waisted PowerSoft Leggings are a steal at under $35 (even less with markdowns). If you can’t resist a bargain, these leggings won’t disappoint, despite the modest price tag. They feature a high elastic waist and soft, moisture-wicking material. There are also plenty of colors and patterns up for grabs. These form-fitting leggings may quickly become your new go-to, whether for the gym or styled alongside your daily ensemble. We love the broad size and length range for finding your perfect fit. Keep in mind, they sit on the lower end of the compression scale, according to a handful of reviews.

Why We Like It: They’re completely opaque — not transparent whatsoever.

It’s Worth Noting: The pockets are too small for most phones.

Girlfriend Collective is already winning on karma points (their clothes are made with recycled materials, and you can return worn Girlfriend Collective clothing to their recycling program), and now, they’ve got some of the best compression leggings for those who prefer light compression, too. The stitching makes these leggings feel structured (but not stiff), and the material is thick enough for colder weather. They also have different inseam options to fit different heights, and their wide range of sizes is extra-inclusive. Although these compression leggings have pockets, the pockets are a little too small to fit most phones. The waistband also tends to roll down a bit during lower-body movements such as squats.

Why We Like It: They offer a secure fit despite the mid-rise waistband.

It’s Worth Noting: Despite the wide range, not every size is available.

If high waistbands are not your flow, the 2XU Women's Mid-rise Compression Tights may be the one for you — even more so if hardcore workouts are your forte. Made from the brand’s signature PWX (power weight flex) fabric, they’re designed to blend compression and flexibility to give you the most from a workout. The material is moisture-wicking to keep the leggings from sticking from sweat. As for the waistband? It sits perfectly just below your belly button while staying firmly in place with its powermesh (an elastic fabric). They also keep your blood flowing with graduated compression that tapers further up the leg.

Why We Like It: This pair has an ‘ultra-tight’ compression fit.

It’s Worth Noting: Various reviews cite inaccurate sizing — measure twice.

If winter doesn’t deter your outdoor runs, you’ll need a pair of warm leggings that keep out the chill. Under Armour Women's HeatGear High Waisted Leggings are both super light yet keep you warm in winter weather, since they’re lined with fleece. The material is also sweat-wicking and quick-drying. And, a four-way stretch means movement isn’t hindered — so go for those sprints! Oh, and a slipping waistband won't be of concern. Double-sided silicone keeps it from sagging even during dynamic movement.

Why We Like It: They’re completely seamless for a fit like a glove.

It’s Worth Noting: Sheerness may differ depending on color and fit.

If a matching workout set is non-negotiable, the Sculptflex Leggings by SET has a matching bra to complete your look. The leggings are seamless for a slick fit, yet feature subtle ribbing detail. They have a wide waistband for a supportive fit too. The compressive fabric is down to the brand’s Sculptflex, which is stretchy for freedom of movement and high-impact workouts. Match alongside any of the bras from the Sculptflex range and throw on a Sculptflex Sculpt Zip Up to complete your set. The color options are available in three categories: Core Collection, Community Collection, and Limited Edition.

Why We Like It: Fewer seams mean fewer distractions from your practice.

It’s Worth Noting: Built-in UPF 40+ is a rare feature in compression leggings, making these stand out.

The Athleta Salutation Stash ⅞ leggings may quickly become your favored yoga leggings with a hint of compression. Made from Powervita fabric (a recycled polyester/lycra blend) they are soft, stretchy, and breathable for all-round support during your yoga session. They provide UPF 40+ so you can safely take your workout outdoors too. And their moisture-wicking, quick-drying features will keep you dry against perspiration. The waistband is high-rise to hold you in place during flows, while side pockets are an added benefit for stashing your must-haves to and from class.

Why We Like It: They'yre from a proprietary material that’s supportive on joints.

It’s Worth Noting: You may need to size up.

If you’re motivated by heavy weight lifting and high-impact workouts, your joints may find relief with the CW-X Stabilyx Joint Support 3/4 Compression Tight. The leggings are designed with the brand’s EXO-stretch body fabric and EXO-WEB support panel. This acts like kinesiology tape to target and support your joints, including knees and hips, and improve movement biomechanics. This includes the waistband too, for pelvic and lower back support (plus, it conceals a slip-in pocket). Thanks to the multi-directional stretch fabric, you'll be able to move freely in all directions too—so no excuse to skip the box jumps!
