This former receiving room boasted a wallcovering that just had to stay. “I felt like this was an opportunity to show people, if you have a house with amazing features or details, don’t rip them out,” designer Arianne Bellizaire says. “Lean into it, make it relevant, and honor the roots of the house in a fresh new way!”

Bellizaire did just that for our Whole Home 2023 while giving the room a more modern sensibility, choosing two shades of blue paint (Hague Blue and Oval Room Blue by Farrow & Ball) to simultaneously enhance and ground the damask. From there, she carved out a true entryway—not just a vast hallway that flowed into other spaces but a place where you could greet guests before moving into the nearby dining room.

In addition to the entryway, Bellizaire updated the home's airy stair landing. She chose a geometric wallpaper by Zoffany to welcome guests into the home. The modern print draws inspiration from the past as you walk upstairs into the future. A small sitting area waits at the top of the stairs with a window that overlooks the untiled roofline. Hunter Douglas two-way automated shades give the option to control the natural light in a space while blocking less-than-ideal views. And custom dividers pulled from Architectural Grille's Frank Lloyd Wright collection can be moved easily, signaling to guests which spaces are off-limits.
