Choosing floor coverings is one of the most important decisions when decorating your home because, once you install them, you will hardly change them in a few years. The most important items when choosing them are price, quality and design, but many will agree that ease of maintenance is increasingly a decisive factor.

For the money spent, we want to get a practical and permanent solution for the home, which will not empty our budget. This is exactly why wood imitation floor tiles have become a very popular solution when it comes to floor coverings.Find out the differences between ceramic and porcelain tiles and how wood imitation floor tiles compare to parquet and laminate.

It may seem at first glance that they are the same, but there are several important differences between ceramic and porcelain tiles.Besides being more expensive, porcelain tiles are of better quality and less porous because they have a denser structure than ceramic tiles. They absorb a maximum of 0.5% of water, and ceramic ones absorb a little more than that.

The reason lies in the fact that a special mixture of kaolin clay, as well as significant amounts of quartz and feldspar minerals, is used for the production of porcelain tiles. That is why it is often recommended to install porcelain tiles in the bathroom, but glazed ceramic tiles can be an equally good choice, since they still leak less water than unglazed ones.

Both types of tiles are very easy to maintain, just wipe them with a damp cloth, and if you choose dark joints for the floor, cleaning will be even easier. The durability of porcelain and ceramic tiles is equal, and with proper installation and maintenance of the joints, they can last even longer than 60 years.

As for their installation, ceramic tiles are simpler because porcelain tiles are more sensitive when cutting, so they require the professional hand of a craftsman so that the tile does not break.

When it comes to ceramic or porcelain tiles compared to other floor coverings, there are several factors that make them stand out. Therefore, if you are hesitating between floor tiles and parquet, or perhaps laminate, the following factors can significantly influence your final decision.

If we take into account the average price of finished oak parquet (about 30 euros/m2) or classic massive oak parquet (from 45 to 50 euros/m2), as well as the average price of their installation (about 20 euros/m2), we can conclude that this material represents the biggest cost.

But what many will single out as one of the main advantages is the special feeling of warmth it provides to the home.Parquet is also a long-term solution since with regular maintenance, which includes sanding and varnishing every 10 years, it can last up to 50 years.Of course, the shelf life also depends on the type of parquet (classic massive or ready-made parquet), the type of wood, the quality of the installation and the coating, i.e. the surface of the parquet.

Given that many are initially discouraged by the cost of purchasing and installing parquet, in the last few years floor tiles in imitation of wood have become a very popular alternative.Unlike parquet, they are much more affordable. The average price of laying tiles is around 20 euros/m2, and the average price of wood imitation floor tiles ranges from 11 to 15 euros/m2.For example, the brown matte Serra tile from the Pevex range costs 14.59 euros/m2, and in the photo below you can see how it very successfully imitates the look of wood.

In addition to the lower price, the additional advantage of the tiles is that they are more resistant to scratches, easier to maintain, and mites and dust do not penetrate the tiles but remain on their surface and are easy to wipe.Ceramic tiles also have a longer lifespan if properly maintained and are a particularly good choice if you are considering underfloor heating.

Depending on where you place the tiles, pay attention to the number next to the letter R because, the higher it is, the higher the anti-slip coefficient (R9, R10, R11, R12, R13).

As a third option, you can choose laminate, which is also a "budget friendly" option compared to parquet, and the price of the material itself is similar to the price of tiles.Unlike parquet and floor tiles, its lifespan is shorter, around 25 years, but some manufacturers guarantee up to 30 years. Also, when it is scratched or worn, you cannot sand and varnish it, as is the case with parquet, but a complete replacement is required.

On the other hand, the "click system" is much simpler to install compared to tiles and parquet, and if you decide to install it yourself, you will significantly reduce the total cost because the average installation price is around 14 euros/m2.Laminate is easy to maintain, but it can be sensitive to water and moisture.Today, new, modern variants of laminate are available, which are more and more similar to parquet, but the difference is still noticeable.

Granito Tile The final choice still depends on your budget and preferences, but if you take into account the price, durability of the material and ease of maintenance, floor tiles in imitation of wood are definitely ahead of other options. And if you are worried that the room will seem cold with them, you can achieve a feeling of warmth with a carpet and solve that problem very easily.
